Frank Patrick Herbert was born on Octorber 8, 1920 in Tacoma Washington. When Herbert originally wrote the first Dune novel, he was working as a journalist and was engaged in science fiction as a hobby. Dune was rejected by 20 publishers before it was eventually picked up and sold 12 million copies. In 1972, Herbert began writing full time. He died February 11, 1986 in Madison, Wisconsin. The son of Frank, Brian Herbert picked up his fathers works and began writing his own line of books within the Dune franchise and with writer Kevin J. Anderson.
